Teaching Tools

The potential for learning with this book is incredible. There are so many themes that beg to be explored – democracy, civil rights, non-violence, social action, civil disobedience, segregation and integration. I have two packed curriculum guides made especially to go with Marching for Freedom.

Google Lit Trip

Lit Trips use Google Earth to map out the story journey taken in books. Lit Trips founder, Jerome Burg, and I have collaborated on a Marching for Freedom Lit Trip. It’s a great way to get proficient at Google Earth, while meeting teaching standards for technology, English, and history.

We’ve designed the site so students can explore notable people and places of Selma, then “fly” with the protesters on the march to Montgomery. We’ve pulled together quotes and photos and film clips I couldn’t put in the book, and created an author strand for my comments.

Jerome was brilliant at coming up with great questions for students that encourage critical thinking about their own values and actions. Check it out here at Marching for Freedom Lit Trip. Connections to many fantastic websites are available in the Lit Trip pop-up windows.

Curriculum Guide for Teachers

This guide by educator Jean West includes a preparatory activity and five lesson plans: People Power; Word Power; Photo Power; Music Power; and Marching On.

Use the preparatory activity to set up a class bulletin board. Add content throughout the lessons to end up with an all-encompassing visual display of what the students in your class have learned. Finish up with ways to be of service to the community.

All the lesson plans are specifically correlated to the national standards set by the National Council for Social Studies and the International Reading Association/National Council for Teachers of English.

Be sure to check out the “Resources on the Internet” in each section for great website connections.

Picturing America

Just want to mention that the photo of the marchers by James Karales, (seen on my contents page) is one of a hundred photos chosen by NEH’s Picturing America to represent the United States history and heritage. The whole Picturing America site is fascinating, and here's a PDF with information about the photo and some terrific questions to discuss.

I love researching and writing books, both fiction and nonfiction. I'm fascinated by courageous, artistic people. I also love to speak at schools and conferences.
